Helpful driving tips curated by professionals to keep you safe on the road.
The recommended hand position is 9 and 3 o'clock, not 10 and 2. NHTSA updated this guidance because airbag deployment at 10-and-2 can drive your hands into your face, causing serious injury.

A few states allow you to briefly exceed the speed limit when passing on two-lane roads. Colorado allows up to 10 mph over, Idaho up to 15 mph over, and Minnesota up to 10 mph over. Most states do not allow this — check your local laws.

For drivers under 21, all 50 states enforce zero-tolerance laws for alcohol. Most states set the limit at 0.00–0.02% BAC — any measurable amount can result in automatic license suspension, even without visible impairment.

The white dashed lines on US highways are actually 10 feet long with 30-foot gaps between them. At highway speeds they appear much shorter due to the way our brains compress distance at speed.

Right turn on red is legal in all 50 states after a complete stop, unless a sign prohibits it. New York City is a notable exception — right on red is banned citywide unless a sign specifically allows it.

Signal before you brake, not after. Most states require activating your turn signal at least 100 feet before turning. Signaling first warns drivers behind you before you slow down, reducing rear-end collisions.
